She reportedly told him that she had read about the Logan murder trial in the newspaper and was wondering whether the Olive Foster in the case was the same person who used to work with her family as a maidservant shortly after their arrival in Jamaica. One day after Olive Foster's testimony was first published in the newspaper, a woman identifying herself as the wife of an official from the Canadian High Commission, telephoned defence counsel Walker. He subsequently gave three confessional statements in which he admitted to being present at the time when the widow was murdered.

She told the Investigating Officer, Det Sergeant Isadore "Dick" Hibbert (now Retired Assistant Commissioner), that the jewellery had been given to her for safe-keeping by Wright.īased on that bit of information, the court was told, Wright was held. Star witness for the prosecution, Olive Foster, who was found with the stolen jewellery belonging to the deceased, was apprehended somewhere in one of the rural parishes. Attorney Roy Taylor (now deceased) appeared for the other (unnamed) accused. As is common knowledge, Patterson, QC, is now former prime minister of Jamaica. P J Patterson, who had been in private practice at the time, had originally appeared for Wright, but he too, having taken up a political appointment, handed over the case to Walker (now retired Judge of Appeal). Presiding judge was Justice K C Henry and counsel appearing for Wright was Justice Clarence W Walker, barrister-at-law from the Chambers of Dudley Thompson, QC, who by then, had been appointed minister of foreign affairs in Michael Manley's 1972 administration. Justice Henderson Downer, crown counsel in the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions and later Judge of Appeal, marshalled the case for the prosecution. It was alleged by the Crown that two gangsters, Christopher Wright and Delroy Logan (no relation), had broken into the Hope Road residence of the widow, tied her up, robbed, then strangled the poor, defenceless old lady by stuffing a rag into her mouth. Personal jewellery, said to belong to Mrs Logan, as well as other items, took up quite a bit of space in the courtroom. Writing this is extremely painful as the Logans were like family. We did not have the comfort then of electric lights. A 'Home-Sweet-Home' kerosene lamp brought tears to my eyes as it reminded me of the lamp my two brothers and I had to do our homework and study by in earlier years. I sat in the No 2 Home Circuit Court in the latter part of 1972 and watched as the police brought exhibits in the case into the court. So too were his wife and only son, Robert, Jr, called 'Bobby' by everyone in Fletcher's Land in the early days.

I am recalling now, the murder most foul, of the 80-odd year-old widow of Dr Logan, a medical doctor, who had served the Fletcher's Land community for many, many years, oftentimes offering free medical care to those who could not afford it. Every morning at 6 o'clock, those lines would come blaring over a loud speaker set up by Dr Robert Logan, who lived opposite my parents' home, at the top of Church Street.ĭr Logan was the owner of that estate, now known as Beverley Gardens - so named by the administration of late Prime Minister Michael Manley, as a tribute to his then wife, Beverley Manley, now Mrs D K Duncan. Among the issues which constantly occupy her mind, in addition to the welfare of her family, are matters concerning community development, gender equality and disenfranchised youth.I was back in Fletcher's Land, Kingston where I was born. She is also a well-known servant leader who has made political headlines in Jamaica, with stunning upsets on her journey to Parliament. Juliet has been married for almost twenty (20) years to The Most Honorable Andrew Holness, Prime Minister of Jamaica, with whom she has worked tirelessly to raise their two sons – Adam and Matthew. The Most Honorable Juliet Holness, Member of Parliament and Spouse of the Prime Minister of Jamaica, has graciously agreed to provide thought leadership to the issues of child sexual abuse in Jamaica and across the Diaspora as keynote for the second annual Protect the Children Gala.įemale Development World Organization (FDWO), formerly known as Jamaica International Female Football Development (JIFFD) in Association with Kiwanis Club of Lauderhill is proud to host youth and children advocates, community, business, faith leaders and dignitaries on Saturday, April 29th at 6:00PM at the Hyatt Regency, Fort Lauderdale.
